Sycomore and the Musée de la Romanité: a technological collaboration for a brand-new visit experience
27 September 2024
To enrich the fascinating dive into Roman history offered by the Musée de la Romanité in Nîmes, the museum turned to Sycomore, a leader in cultural interpretation technologies, to create its geolocated multimedia guide: a device combining infrared and Bluetooth for an innovative, personalised visit.
The M-Guide: a geolocated multimedia tool
Sycomore's M-Guide is much more than a simple audio guide. With its 5.5-inch screen, this multimedia device gives access to enriched content — videos, images, audio commentaries — available in several languages. Its strength: precise geolocation, made possible by the integration of infrared and Bluetooth technologies.
Infrared precisely locates visitors' devices within the museum's various zones, a precision essential for synchronising audiovisual content with each person's exact position: every piece of information is delivered at the right time and in the right place. In addition, Bluetooth provides effective indoor location, allowing visitors to find their way around the spaces and plan their route according to their interests.
A precise technical study for each zone of the museum
To deploy these technologies, Sycomore carried out an in-depth technical study: each zone of the museum was analysed to identify the solutions best suited to the layout of the spaces and to determine the optimal locations for the beacons.
In total, 25 infrared zones were installed and configured to work in synchronisation with the museum's audiovisual elements. When a visitor enters a new section or approaches an artefact, the M-Guide automatically activates the corresponding description, for a smooth, intuitive visit. The Bluetooth beacons, essential for indoor location where GPS does not work, allow the M-Guide to display the visitor's position in real time on an interactive map.
150 M-Guides: a turnkey solution
Sycomore supplied 150 5.5-inch M-Guides along with all the associated peripherals. Each device was configured to offer an intuitive interface and rich content suited to all visitors, whether novices or experts in Roman history, with perfect synchronisation of the audiovisual content and commentaries tailored to each person's language and preferences. The M-Guides also include interactive features, quizzes and educational games, to test one's knowledge in a fun way.
A personalised, immersive visit
Whether you are passionate about Roman architecture, curious about the construction techniques of the era or interested in the daily life of the Romans, the M-Guide offers a route tailored to everyone's expectations. Its multilingual options allow visitors from all over the world to enjoy the exhibition in their mother tongue, making Roman culture accessible to an international audience while enriching the experience of local visitors.
This collaboration illustrates how modern technologies are transforming the visit experience: with a technical installation tailored to the museum's specific features and a turnkey solution, the Musée de la Romanité now offers total immersion in the fascinating history of ancient Rome.
