MGuide innovation: the evolution of multimedia guides over the years

The evolution of multimedia guides has profoundly changed the visitor experience in museums and cultural sites: beyond software advances, the hardware itself has been transformed to become more durable, more ergonomic and better suited to users' needs.

The first devices: the birth of the multimedia guide

In 2004, the Château de Chenonceau called on Sycomore to develop a self-guided visit solution. This partnership marked one of the first turning points in the history of multimedia devices with the introduction of an iPod as a visit guide: a revolutionary device at the time, which made it possible to listen to audio-guided commentaries without following a predetermined route.

A few years later, Sycomore integrated the iPod Touch into visit trails, with several notable advantages:

• a larger touchscreen, allowing better interaction;
• increased storage capacity, making it easier to integrate richer video and audio content;
• improved ergonomics, with a more intuitive handling for all ages.

The smartphone with protective case: robustness and durability

In 2015, Sycomore took a new step by launching a device based on smartphone technology, specially designed for high-traffic cultural sites. Its rugged protective case shields the device from drops, scratches and the wear of intensive use, makes it accessible to all audiences, including children, and extends the lifespan of the equipment. This model was used for the first time in partnership with the Louvre-Lens.

In 2018, the design was further refined with the "built-in case", integrated directly into the device. The Château de Chenonceau, ever the pioneer, was the first site to adopt this generation, offering better integration of components, a more comfortable grip and increased resistance.

New-generation devices: MGuide technology

Since 2021, the devices have abandoned external cases: protection is built directly into the design. Closer to smartphones, these models are designed for the specific needs of museums and cultural sites:

• larger screens, for videos and interactive maps;
• refined ergonomics and intuitive handling;
• materials certified for their high resistance to drops and wear;
• long-life batteries, for continuous use throughout the day.

Within Sycomore, this innovation is called MGuide technology.

Software advances in the service of the experience

Hardware is not the only thing to have evolved. The new multimedia guides incorporate enriched features:

• Interactive maps: geolocated maps, both inside and outside the sites, to help visitors find their way.
• Geolocation: real-time position tracking, whose data can also be used to optimise visitor flows.
• Immersive content: videos, archive images, interviews, augmented and virtual reality.
• Integrated e-commerce: promotion of nearby shops, restaurants and attractions.

From the first iPods to the latest-generation devices, the manufacturing process of multimedia guides has never stopped improving. Thanks to these hardware and software advances, the multimedia guide has become an essential tool for museums and cultural sites around the world.
