The Conciergerie in Paris: a deep dive into history with Sycomore Vox tour guide systems

20 December 2024

A former royal residence turned legendary prison, the Conciergerie, at the heart of the Île de la Cité, has adopted Sycomore Vox tour guide systems to enrich its visitors' experience, particularly during group visits.

A fascinating history

Built in the 14th century, the Conciergerie was part of the Palais de la Cité, the first residence of the kings of France. This palace served as the seat of royal power, hosting sumptuous banquets and crucial political decisions; its vast Gothic halls, such as the famous Hall of the Men-at-Arms, bore witness to the grandeur of the medieval monarchy.

Over time, the Conciergerie was converted into a prison. Its notoriety peaked during the French Revolution, when it held famous prisoners such as Marie-Antoinette — a tragic final stop for many of the condemned before their execution. Listed as a historic monument in the 19th century, it is now managed by the Centre des monuments nationaux (CMN), which oversees its preservation and promotion.

The Conciergerie today

The Conciergerie is far more than a relic of the past: it is a living museum, hosting temporary exhibitions and cultural events. Visitors can explore its historic spaces, such as the reconstructed cell of Marie-Antoinette and the Guards' Hall. Regular guided tours offer fascinating perspectives on the monument's different eras, from its role in the medieval monarchy to its revolutionary significance.

A new group tour system

To improve the quality of its educational visits, the CMN turned to Sycomore Vox, a recognized supplier of high-performance tour guide systems. Equipped for several years, it recently renewed its partnership by adopting the Microguide model: two transmitters and 30 latest-generation receivers, compliant with current European standards, for clear, reliable transmission even in the most demanding environments.

Thanks to the audio receivers, group members can step away to explore architectural details and the works on display while staying connected to the guide's commentary. This system is particularly appreciated for school groups and training sessions, making visits accessible and interactive.
