Indoor location technologies for audio guides: optimising the visitor experience

Indoor location technology is at the heart of the evolution of audio guides: by determining visitors' exact position, it makes it possible to trigger content suited to their immediate surroundings, making the visit smoother and more engaging. An overview of the main methods used in modern audio guides.

Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE): a versatile technology

BLE transmits data over short distances while consuming very little energy. Beacons placed at strategic locations emit signals picked up by the audio guides to estimate the visitor's position to within a few metres. Inexpensive to install and maintain, compact and easy to conceal, these beacons offer precision that is generally adequate for museums and galleries. BLE nonetheless remains sensitive to interference from other Bluetooth devices or physical obstacles such as thick walls, and the beacons require regular checks.

Infrared: precision and simplicity

Infrared technology relies on emitters whose signals, unlike radio waves, require a direct line of sight: position detection is therefore very precise, an asset when several works are close to one another. Highly energy-efficient and long proven, it nonetheless requires a clear line of sight, which can pose challenges in cluttered or frequently rearranged spaces; its limited range may also require a large number of emitters to cover vast areas.

Ultra-Wideband (UWB): extreme precision

UWB uses an extremely wide bandwidth to locate a visitor to within a few centimetres and track their movements in real time, while being less prone to interference than other technologies. This precision comes at a cost: UWB consumes more energy, is more expensive to produce and install, and requires advanced technical expertise. It is therefore often reserved for applications where precision is absolutely essential.

QR codes and reference numbers: proven simplicity

Placed next to the works, QR codes give access to digital content via a smartphone camera, without any additional device. Their limitation: they rely on the visitor's initiative and allow neither location nor real-time tracking.

Reference numbers, entered manually into the audio guide, remain a reliable traditional method, with no complex installation, no risk of technical failure and very low energy consumption — but without automatic location, the experience is less smooth and less interactive.

Artwork recognition: AI in the service of immersion

By pointing their device at a work, visitors instantly access contextualised information, identified automatically by artificial intelligence, with possible personalisation according to their interests. This technology nonetheless requires significant computing power that reduces battery life, depends on the quality of the images captured, and may require a stable internet connection and infrastructure that is costly to maintain.

Choosing the right technology

Each solution has its advantages and limitations in terms of precision, interactivity, cost and energy consumption. The right choice depends on the site's specific needs, the available budget and the desired user experience: the key is to find the balance that offers visitors an enriching, memorable experience, while ensuring the durability and efficient management of the devices.
