Journey to the centre of the earth: experience the Gouffre de Padirac with the S-Guide

22 January 2026

An extraordinary underground expedition

Imagine: after a vertiginous descent, 103 metres below the surface, you enter one of France's most striking underground sites. A lift is available -- or, for the more adventurous, a staircase of 455 steps -- to reach the heart of the chasm. Once at the bottom, a 90-minute adventure begins, filled with wonder, history, legends (such as that of the Drac), and natural discoveries.

You then board a boat that glides silently along the underground river, through a network of vast caverns. The experience combines walking, navigation, and wonder -- a memorable visit for all ages.

The S-Guide: your modern tour companion

No more handheld or neck-worn audioguides. The Gouffre de Padirac now uses the S-Guide, an intelligent audio headset with automatic triggering. Through a network of discreet infrared zones placed along the route, audio commentary launches automatically, synchronised with your position. The result: a fully hands-free, fluid, and immersive visit.

The system allows visitors to explore the galleries and underground river without handling any device -- free to observe the natural formations, listen to legendary tales, or simply take in the silence and mysterious darkness. Several hundred devices -- up to 1,300 -- are available to ensure comfort and fluidity.

A tour in three stages: immersion, exploration, navigation

The Gouffre de Padirac visit unfolds in three main stages, each offering a distinct experience:

Accessibility, practical information, and multilingual immersion

The site welcomes a broad audience: families, geology enthusiasts, and adventure seekers. A few practical details for planning your visit:

For visitors with reduced mobility: although lifts exist, the route includes stairs and platforms -- the visit is not fully wheelchair-accessible, but priority or adapted access may be arranged on a case-by-case basis.

The visit lasts approximately 90 minutes, from descent to return to the surface.

The underground environment remains at around 13 degrees C: warm clothing and suitable footwear are recommended.

Audioguides (S-Guide) are generally available at the entrance, with commentary in several languages (French, English, Spanish, German, Dutch, Japanese, and others) -- making the experience accessible to international visitors.

Why the Gouffre de Padirac remains an unforgettable experience

The Gouffre de Padirac combines nature, history, legend, and technology. The descent into the earth, the navigation on an underground river, the mysterious silence of the caverns -- all contribute to a complete immersion, unique in Europe.

With the arrival of the S-Guide, the visit gains in comfort, fluidity, and modernity. No need to hold a device or stay close to a guide -- full freedom of movement, total immersion, synchronised listening.

Whether visiting with family, friends, or as a geology or adventure enthusiast, the Gouffre de Padirac offers a spectacular journey beneath the earth.
