This trail turns a visit to the local churches into a genuine treasure hunt. The story begins when a mysterious virus, originating from a zoo, starts spreading among the animals. A sick hippopotamus lies at the heart of the mystery, and it is up to the visitor to find the antidote hidden in one of the churches along the circuit. Accompanied by an audio guide with a lively tone, each clue leads to a new church and reveals the architectural and historical secrets of the sites along the way.

Nationale 7: a journey along the legendary holiday route

A radio host invites visitors to rediscover the history of Lapalisse through the famous Nationale 7, nicknamed the holiday route. Inspired by the game Mille Bornes, this circuit recreates the atmosphere of the great summer getaways through sound effects, first-hand accounts and music from the 1950s and 60s: the rise of the automobile, the famous Lapalisse traffic jams, and the hotels and restaurants that lined the road.

Town tour: the Besbre river as tour guide

On this trail, it is the Besbre river itself that plays the role of narrator. It guides visitors through the town and introduces them to emblematic characters — merchants, nuns, nobles, soldiers — all played by actors. The circuit showcases Lapalisse's architectural heritage, its 17th-century hospital, the remains of its former town walls and its château, owned by the de Chabannes family for six centuries.

Surprising anecdotes for total immersion

Did you know that the song about the Maréchal de La Palice, the origin of the famous "truths of Lapalisse", stems from a transcription error? A misread "f" turned "Il ferait encore envie" ("He would still inspire envy") into "Il serait encore en vie" ("He would still be alive"). Another curiosity: before the bypass was built in 2006, the Nationale 7 ran right through the town, creating monster traffic jams in summer — a festive event, "L'Embouteillage" (The Traffic Jam), now recreates this vintage atmosphere with more than 1,000 classic vehicles and 20,000 visitors.
