How to define your cultural interpretation needs before choosing an audio guide or visit solution
25 April 2025
Audio guide, mobile app, interactive visit or multimedia device: each tool meets specific needs, and choosing the right solution for your site is not something to improvise — here is how to structure your thinking to precisely define your cultural interpretation needs.
What is your site's profile?
First of all, identify the nature of your cultural venue: museum, château, religious site, open-air heritage site, temporary exhibition, city tour or specialized industrial site? Is the route indoor, outdoor or mixed? Linear or complex, with several locations or levels to cover? These characteristics influence the type of device to favour: an urban site with a continuous flow of visitors will not have the same needs as an isolated historic garden or a multi-site circuit.
What type of experience do you want to offer?
Cultural interpretation can take many forms:
- A classic, informative visit to convey content accessible to everyone
- An immersive, creative visit (music, sound effects, sonic staging)
- A themed visit for children, with quizzes or adapted narration
- An interactive visit, with multimedia content, videos or touch-based activities
The choice of tone, pace and narrative form influences the type of medium recommended.
What are your technical constraints?
Assessing technical constraints ensures the project's feasibility and durability: can the site accommodate a specific technical installation (kiosks, charging racks, Bluetooth signal, infrared)? Do you have stable network connections? Are there already screens, tablets or audiovisual content on site? Can you place signage or stickers along the routes? Are there sound restrictions to respect (religious venue, quiet atmosphere)?
Who are your visitors?
Knowing your audience is fundamental: how many visitors do you welcome each year? Does attendance vary with the seasons? What proportion of visitors are from abroad? Which profiles do you want to attract more — families, young people, visitors with disabilities, school groups, non-specialist audiences? The answers steer the design towards a multilingual, inclusive or more playful, educational device.
What are your interpretation and communication objectives?
Every project serves one or more objectives that should be clarified upfront: enhancing your site's accessibility, modernizing your image, reaching a wider audience, boosting off-season attendance, showcasing a little-known route or creating a signature experience. Your cultural and strategic ambitions should guide the choice of visit solution.
